Dipping Guidelines - Washing of Angoras Goats before shearing

Tuesday, 20th March 2018

The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished, and finished textile products. The export of Mohair to Europe is regulated by strict residue criteria set by OEKO-TEX®.

Mohair producers have, for some time now, been made aware of the guidelines set by the Mohair industry for the use of dips and pour-on products in the control of ectoparasites (lice and ticks).

Testing has now also highlighted that washes used by some producers to clean the mohair prior to shearing leaves unacceptable residues as determined by OEKO-TEX®.

What are the residues detected in these washes?

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) namely alkylphenols and their alkylphenol exthoxylates.

What are EDCs?

EDCs are chemicals which may have an adverse effect on human and animals by disrupting the endocrine system.

What is endocrine disruption?

The endocrine system is the system of glands, organs and tissues that secrete hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical messengers that are critical to many body processes, including growth, development, metabolism, and sexual differentiation. Some chemicals can block normal hormonal function in animals and humans. This process is called endocrine disruption.

On the basis of its comprehensive and strict regulation of substances, the OEKO-TEX® standards feedback along with residue trials has resulted in the Mohair industry setting guidelines for the cleaning of mohair.

The ONLY recommended wash for Angora goats (other than clean water) are products TESTED and meet the current requirements, in line with OEKO-TEX® regulations.

These products currently include:

  • Breedz+ Angora clip preparation produced by Caprichem.

  • Mohair Wash and Mohair Soft -SS Chemicals which are available in 25, 200 and 1000 litre containers. (Off licence animal use). For more information contact Stuart Fuller on 082 553 1953 or sfuller@wol.co.za.

  • Golden Products - LDC concentrate is a product sold and distributed by Golden Products, contact you nearest Golden Products representative for more information. (Off licence animal use)

The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 published the sum limit values of  Nonylphenol (NP), Octylphenol (OP),  Octylphenol ethoxylate (OPE0),Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE0) which was effective from 1 April 2016:

These current OEKO-TEX® standard limit values are valid until 3 February 2021.

From 3 February 2021 the OEKO-TEX® Association will go one step further, through its certification system STeP, and strictly prohibit the use of NP, OP, NPEP and OPEO.

The SAMGA and Mohair SA guidelines will be reviewed prior to 3 February 2021 when the total ban on nonylphenol ethyoxylates by OEKO-TEX® comes into effect or when further residue tests become available.

These guidelines may change in future as determined by the OEKO-TEX® standards and as further information obtained from residue trials becomes available.
